Spasticity, part of the upper motor neuron syndrome, is a challenging post-ABI clinical impairment that requires a hierarchical approach to assessment and treatment. Spasticity can limit recovery/demonstration of consciousness, ADL and mobility skills, impede speech and swallowing, as well as increase medical morbidity. Oral medications can be cognitively impairing and may not be clinically beneficial. Botulinum neurotoxins, intrathecal back within, positioning techniques phenol/alcohol nerve in motor point blocks and other interventions are all utilized in combination and variable degrees. Evidence for the various interventions is also variable.
This course will address spasticity management from childhood through adulthood.
